Birth Place: Bamako , US
About Me : My name is Attaher Cisse and I am a Toureg craftsman in Mali, West Africa. I was born in Bamako August 1, 1978 but I was raised in the Timbuktu region in a small village called Gargandou. My father, Mohamed Ag, deceased and my mother, Hadizatou Walett Mohamed, were both artisans as well as other members of my family. I received my CEP, Certificat d’etude primaire, in 1990, but I left school in my seventh year to begin working with my father. My father made many different types of jewellery and it was from him that my brothers and I learned our craft. Besides necklaces, bracelets and earrings, we also made knives, camel saddles, and other items that are significant to the Toureg culture. Today I continue the work of my family along with my mother, brothers, sisters and wife. Our work is a truly a heritage passed down for generations. Here in Mali each ethnicity has artisans, and being the artisans for the Touregs, we not only preserve the culture through our craftsmanship but also through our music and stories. Everything we make today has a significance and a use in our culture. The jewellery we offer here permits us to retrace the Toureg history. For me and my family; the fruit of our work is the preservation of our culture and our people.
